Our Story
Kotavya started with a simple, slightly stubborn idea: why print thousands of t-shirts that nobody's asked for?
What's in a name
Kotavya is two words stitched together. Kota is our family name. Bhavya is a Sanskrit word meaning grand or splendid. Put them together and you get what we're after: everyday things with a bit of quiet grandeur. Not flash, not shouty. Just the tee you reach for first on a Saturday morning, or the mug that somehow always ends up back on your desk.
The trouble with "just in case"
Most printed clothing is made just in case. Thousands of shirts are printed in guessed sizes and colours, boxed up and stacked in warehouses on the off-chance someone wants them. Plenty never sell. They end up in a clearance bin, then a bin bag. We didn't fancy adding to that.
So we flipped it
We design the artwork. You pick your favourite. Only then does it get printed, onto good-quality blank garments, mugs, prints and totes from established makers we trust. Nothing is printed until you've ordered it, so there's no overstock and no end-of-season sale rail. Every piece that leaves us already has somewhere to go.
It takes a few days longer than grabbing something off the shelf. We reckon that's a fair trade for something that exists because you wanted it.
Designed in the West Midlands
Kotavya is run from the West Midlands by a designer by training: the sort of person who'll happily spend an afternoon nudging a letter two millimetres to the left. That fussiness goes into every design. Clean type, considered marks, muted colours. Nothing that'll feel dated by next summer.
We're just as particular about what we print on. Our Organic Collection is printed on 100% organic cotton blanks from a specialist maker that runs on renewable energy, and it arrives in plastic-free packaging. The full detail is on our Materials & Craft page.
