What Is Print on Demand, and Why It Means Less Waste

When you order from Kotavya, your piece doesn't exist yet. It's printed after you click buy. That's print on demand, sometimes called made to order, and it's quietly changing how clothing and homeware get made.

How print on demand works

  1. We design the artwork. Each Kotavya design starts as a drawing, refined until it feels right.
  2. You choose your piece. Pick the design, the product, the size and the colour.
  3. It's printed for you. Your order goes straight to a UK print partner, who prints your design onto a quality blank garment, mug, print or tote.
  4. It's packed and sent. Your piece is checked, packed and posted to your door, usually within a week or so.

The problem with "just in case"

Most clothing is made just in case. Brands guess how many of each size and colour will sell, produce them in bulk months in advance, and store them in warehouses. When the guess is wrong, the leftovers are discounted, discounted again, and often end up in landfill or incinerated. Overproduction is one of fashion's biggest hidden problems.

Why made to order is different

  • No overstock. Nothing is printed unless someone has ordered it, so there are no piles of unsold stock.
  • No end-of-season dumping. Designs don't go "out of season" and get cleared out; they're simply printed when wanted.
  • Less waste overall. Fewer unsold goods means fewer resources spent making things nobody wears.
  • More choice. Because we don't hold stock, we can offer more designs without the risk of leftovers.

Print on demand vs fast fashion

Fast fashion is built on speed and volume: lots of cheap pieces, made fast and replaced quickly. Print on demand flips that. It's built on making only what's needed and choosing quality blanks that last. It isn't perfect. Shipping individual orders has its own footprint, which is why we choose print partners that use renewable energy and plastic-free packaging where they can.

Is it slower?

A little. Printing usually takes 2 to 5 working days before dispatch, then 2 to 5 working days for UK delivery. We think a few extra days is a fair trade for something made because you wanted it. See our shipping policy for details.

What about returns?

Because each piece is printed for you, personalised items can't be returned for a change of mind. Standard designs can still be returned within 14 days, and anything faulty or misprinted is always put right. Read our Returns & Refunds policy.
